After completing 3 years of law school, graduating from Oxford Brookes University,
passing the notorious bar exams (CLP), achieving multiple milestones in my legal career,
being given the chance to submit before esteemed judges, and having worked with many brilliant
minds in litigation and meeting the best colleagues one could only wish for, I’ve finally
decided to make the transition into the world of tech!
I had previously spent 2 years working in a small litigation firm and 1 year in a
medium-sized litigation firm. During my second year, I was given a chance to work in one
of the most renowned litigation firms. I was grateful for the opportunity as the firm was
known to be extremely selective. However, I chose to reject the opportunity, and
instead, stay in my previous firm as at the time, my previous boss had entrusted me with
more responsibilities and hands-on work. In retrospect, I’m glad I had made that choice
as I was able to walk away with the practical legal knowledge, business acumen, and
client-management skills which I would not have otherwise experienced!
Being in litigation, there were lot of times you'd have to think on your feet
(eg; your client sabotaging their case while being cross-examined!), or you're pushed
into situations where you have major butterflies – you just want to turn and run, but
you can't. You have to perform at a high level, and so, you figure out ways to push
through, even though you’re totally scared to death. Its those types of scenarios,
I think, that had helped me develop the character and develop certain skills which had
assisted me greatly in the next step of my career.
I have always been intrigued with the power of story-telling through media since I was
as young as 12 years old! After my stint as a lawyer, I have decided to continue my passion
for story-telling through digital marketing. Sure, I received a couple of disapproving
looks from people around me (some well-disguised, some not!) when I'd told them of
my choice to leave my professional legal career, but deep down, I knew what I needed to
do. And so, I chose to follow my guts and tuned those voices out!
I'm also a bit of a tech-geek, and so, this had benefitted me tremendously in the transition to my new career.
Out of interest, I also decided to sign up for a Web Development bootcamp ( HTML5, CSS, & Javascript)!
Since passing the rather steep learning curve last year, I was grateful to be able to
pick up some side projects and further hone my digital skills. Also yes, I built, developed,
and designed this website myself from scratch!
